When the work of the red Cross started, I think the big focus was on saving lives and treating the wounded and helping on both sides in conflicts. Over time it became clear that it is very important to help the helpers, to care for the carers. It is a volunteer-based organisation and I think there is a big realisation and understanding of the fact that volunteer work is not just unpaid work, it is also people who invest themselves in the work, they actually give themselves to the work to help others.
