Khan Yunis in the Southern Gaza strip has been the scene of intense bombardments and violence and Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has introduced a new way of supporting the children exposed.
It is obviously extremely difficult to provide a sense of safety in Gaza, but we always try to help children no matter the challenges. A new concept ‘Psychological First Aid Camp’ was implemented for the first time in Gaza. It was for six consecutive days, implemented in six shelters in Khan Yunis where so many civilian lives have been lost. Around 800 children participated in the PFA camp, which included recreational activities and various stations such as storytelling, cutting and pasting, traditional Dabke dance, and painting aiming to reduce the distress of children who have recently been exposed to deeply traumatic events.
Mostafa Kollab a member of the PRCS MHPSS Unit describes how: “Palestinian children are being exposed to repeated violence that led to anxious state and extreme fear, hyperactivity and trauma. “My dearest wish is the end of this war and the smiles we see in the pictures remain on the children’s faces and they live a peaceful and safe life.”
