World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 - what should we say?

The theme of World Suicide Prevention Day 10 September 2025 is ‘Changing the narrative on suicide’. That means to start the coversation based on openness, empathy, and support and to avoid misconceptions.

More than 700,000 lives are lost to suicide every year, the vast majority in low- and middle-income countries, and suicide is a leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds.

Language forms and reflects opinions and perceptions. Words can carry or generate stigmatization and misperceptions. When we talk about suicide, it is important that we use sensitive wording. Phrasing that implies guilt, failure, or victimization can be replaced with better alternatives.
