Heartbeat of Humanity: Kenya Red Cross' new MHPSS framework and mental health stigma in Kenya

When I pick up the phone and I hear a man on the other end of the line, I always open the conversation with congratulating him for calling – a suicide-threatened man calling for help is facing a lot of discrimination. The mental health needs of Kenyans – and Africans – first of all, is about recognition. Mental health has not been taken seriously for a while, even in big organizations, it’s an invisible pain that people can’t see, and what people can’t see, they don’t understand, and what you can’t understand you ignore, but with this framework, we will address and counter the suicide rates

In this episode of Heartbeat of Humanity, Communications Officer Trine Rosa Larsen interviews three Kenya Red Cross MHPSS practitioners Soony Wendy, Leyla Semkiwa, and Albert Migowa about the new KRCS MHPSS Framework, operating the toll-free 1199 helpline, mental health stigma in Kenya, suicide prevention, body-shaming, methadone clinics, the El-Nino floods, and how they ensure caring for staff and volunteers.

The podcast Heartbeat of Humanity is mainly for staff and volunteers in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, especially staff and volunteers working in mental health and psychosocial support services.
